Must be the Capes

Y'know, its weird how the little things can influence you later in life.

My first video game (that I can recall clearly) was Super Mario World. In it was this little "cape" power up, that allowed you to fly. (I wouldn't find out 'til later that Yoshi could do it if you fed him wings)

Coincidentally, my first superhero cartoon was the old Max Fleischer (look him up on wikipedia) Superman cartoons. In it, Clark Kent couldn't actually do anything until he ran into the telephone booth and became "Superman."

So, I grew up with this ridiculous notion that it was the capes that allowed Superheroes to fly.
